Introduction

It is a great honor for SAGA, which has continued to support professional artists in the field of printmaking over course of close to 100 years, exhibit Across the Waters as well as SAGA’s most recent Collector Prints The Wisconsin Suite at my Gallery, Galerie RECOLTE. This is also the 20th anniversary of the gallery.
I like prints because they are controlled by the work which the printmaker uses to express, making full use of various techniques. It seems to be a completely beautiful mathematics for me.
I send much gratitude and love to my dear friends of SAGA and to the presidents, Shelley Thorstensen, who gave us and the SAGA members this chance.

Galerie RECOLTE announces the showing of Across the Waters: Prints from the Council of the Society of American Graphic Artists from June 18th– June 30th, 2013.

The Society of American Graphic Artists (SAGA) is a nonprofit US national juried fine arts organization serving professional artists in the field of printmaking. It’s current members number just under 300. SAGA provides its members with exhibition, reviews and networking opportunities in the New York City area and beyond. SAGA’s current offices are at the former New York studio of John Sloan on Union Square in New York City.

The origins of the organization date back to 1915 with the formation of the Brooklyn Society of Etchers. After several name changes, the present title was adopted in 1952 to allow for the inclusion of a full range of hand pulled printmaking techniques. Over the course of close to 100 years of continuous operation, many important national and international modern and contemporary artists are members.

The Council of SAGA consists of artist members dedicated to helping the organization thrive. Current Council Members include President and Galerie RECOLTE artist – Shelley Thorstensen, Vice Presidents Ellen Nathan Singer and Michael Hew Wing, Treasurer Joseph Essig, Recording Secretary Barbara Minton and Corresponding Secretary Marion Lerner-Levine. The SAGA Council represented in the show include Susan Altman, William Behnken, Amir Hariri, Jon Irving, Tenjin Ikeda, Richie Lasansky, Julie Nadel, Masaaki Noda, Tomomi Ono, Mark Pagano, Merle Perlmutter, Florence Putterman, and Steven Walker.

Also included in the show are SAGA’s latest collector Prints, called The Wisconsin Suite. The Collector Prints function as a gift to SAGA from both the participating artist and potential collector. Collector Prints are very small editions, carefully commissioned by each SAGA president, culled from its members. For 2013, SAGA announces six new editions, called The Wisconsin Suite, by some of its esteemed Wisconsin members: Douglas Bosley, Jayne Reid Jackson, Harold Rotzoll, Ron Ruble and Arthur Thrall, and Larry Welo.

SAGA has long reflected the growth and changes taking place in printmaking as well as transformations in the larger world of art. The high standards of SAGA are perpetuated in national exhibitions which continue to expose the public to the best of American printmaking. The mastery of technique and skill in this show is paramount, ranging from etching, lithography, silkscreen and relief print.
